You’ve been working at your writing for some time now. You harbour dreams of getting published. Of seeing your name in print. You have an idea for a piece you think could make for a popular read. But, like a lot of writers, you are plagued by self-doubt.

You may be asking yourself: “Is my work any good?” “Will other people be interested in my ‘little’ story?” “How do I even begin to market my work?” “And who would publish it?”

For writers, there’s nothing like the sense of joy and accomplishment of seeing your byline in print. I know this to be true because I’ve been a journalist, newspaper columnist and travel writer for 40 years and can tell you it never gets tired seeing your name attached to a piece you care about and putting your work out into the world.

That’s why I’m excited to launch my first ever online “Getting Published” workshop, which details the 7 steps you need to follow to get your personal essay/memoir piece published in print and/or online, whether it’s in newspapers, magazines, literary journals, podcasts, newsletters, radio shows, blogs or via contests.

There are so many benefits to having your personal piece published. Besides the satisfaction of knowing an editor is interested in your work, getting your story in print/online can help build your personal platform (this is especially helpful if you are thinking about embarking on a book-length project), establish you as an authority on a particular subject area and give you great content for your social media feeds.

During this workshop I’ll be guiding participants through all the key steps that are important to know in order to achieve publishing success, including:

  1. How to develop great story ideas from your life & why your story angle matters

  2. How to find markets and editors to pitch

  3. How to make your piece timely so it attracts the interests of publishers

  4. What you need to know about lead-times, publishing schedules & the best time to pitch

  5. How to formulate an effective pitch letter: What to do and what not to do

  6. When and how often to follow up with editors

  7. What to do once your piece is published

I’ll teach you what I’ve learned from publishing dozens of columns, personal newsletters and essays over the years, including writing about running away from home for The Globe & Mail, finding a brother I never knew I had for Canadian Living, reflecting on preparing 10,000 meals for my family over the past three decades for Broadview magazine and learning how to stop being a helicopter parent for Parents Canada.

Over the years I’ve helped guide hundreds of people in crafting and sharing their personal true-life tales with my workshops and storytelling events.

It feels great to complete a memoir piece about a meaningful experience in your life. And it feels even better to share it with the world.

I hope you’ll join me!
